Here are are some of the most common issues you may encounter when growing your lychee trees. This section is set up based on the questions I often get regarding lychee growing.
How do I keep birds away from eating my fruit?
The most effective way to stop them is to net the tree. Other methods that may work to some extent would be plastic hawks and owls placed near the trees.Sometimes it scares the bad little birdies away.
What is eating my leaves and leaving missing chunks around the edges?
Caterpillars and leaf-eating beetles (Leaf Notchers) attack new, leaves. This is a big concern when trees are weak and more than 20 percent of the leaf flushes are damaged. Large and healthy trees typically bounce back and spraying may not be required. Young trees really need to be protected and sprayed. Chose organic pesticides for everyone's health and safety!
Why does my fruit split?
This can happen anytime excessive rain prevails for longer than normal. It is more commonly an issue where insufficient watering early in the season is followed by heavy rain storms. The sudden additional water causes the fruit to swell and split.
Poor tree root health can also contribute to the problem. You can reduce fruit splitting by maintaining a uniform soil moisture during the fruits growth. Practice heavy mulching and be sure the trees are getting sufficient calcium. This also happens regularly in over watered container grown trees. Often times, over watering causes trees to die as a result of root rot.
Why are my leaves distorted and have bumps?
Distorted leaves, with or without bumps are symptoms of damage caused by insects. Often times the insects are mites, leaf miners and caterpillars. Herbicidal spray drift can also cause a distorted appearance. Young trees are highly affected. A copper deficiency will often times also be recognized by leaf distortion and curling.
Why are my leaves turning brown around the edges?
Brown edges are usually a sign of one or more of the following: Under watering of trees, salty irrigation water, applying too much fertilizer (particularly nitrogen or boron) It is a good idea to do a leaf and water analysis and review the results. If the tests indicate all is normal you should, review your watering schedule.
Why are my lychee trees flowering but not producing fruiting?
This occurs for the following reasons:
My trees are setting fruit, but it drops off. Why?
Unfortunately, lychee trees sometimes set more fruit than they can handle, causing excess fruit drop. The fruit drop is more common in trees that are stress. Stress can be a factor of unusual temperatures, nutrient deficiencies and prolonged drought.
Green fruit can also drop due to insects (especially stink bugs) feeding on the young green immature fruit. To confirm that insects are the issue, you can cut open fallen fruit and look for light brown/tan lesions on the seed or brown spots inside the skin. Stop the damage before it ruins the crop by applying an appropriate insecticide.
What are the large black and brown marks on my fruit?
Young immature fruit is sometimes damaged by insects, branch and leaf rub or stresses such as drought, excessive heat and nutrient imbalances. These factors can damage cells on the fruits skin. As the fruit grows, more cells around the damaged area die, causing the brown marks to become larger and more noticeable.
My fruit has holes in it or is leaking?
Holes in the fruit are often due to insect pests that include fruit piercing insects and boring caterpillars. Examine and squeeze the damaged fruit. If the hole squirts out juice then insects are the culprits. most of these bad bugs can be controlled with Thurcide or Spinosad.

Why are my lychee trees flowering but not producing fruiting?
This occurs for the following reasons:
- The tree produces only male flowers.
Sometimes trees flower very early and produce only male flowers, no fruit can set without pollination. - Poor pollination: Pollination sensitivity to the weather may result from low humidity, high and low temperature extremes and even overcast conditions.
- Pesticides: Excessive pesticide use and poor timing of the application can kill insect pollinators and reduce fruit set.
