Grumichama trees are a sub-tropical species. They are native to the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Mature plants can handle light frosts and will survive periods of drought. Trees can grow to 20 feet in height.

USDA hardiness zones 9b-10

Tress can produce fruit in three colors. Yellow, red and dark burgundy. Fruits are sweet and largely consumed fresh. Trees can produce a great abundance of fruit but fruit drop can be a problem without sufficient watering.

Grumichama fruit matures very quickly! They go from flower to ripe fruit in 30 days. Trees have both male and female flowers. They are self fertile and pollinated by wind and various insects.

The tree is very ornamental and established plants will tolerate temperatures down to about 27° F. Trees grow best in acid soil with a pH between 5.5-6.5

Sun or part shade

Soil tolerances

Prefers deep, fertile, sandy loam. Alkaline soils will cause deficiencies: iron, manganese, and magnesium.

Trees generally have a shallow root system and benefit tremendously from a thick layer of mulch. They can tolerate some degree of drought and a dry cooler season, followed by heavy rain stimulates flowering.

Watering & Fertilizer

Lots of water in well drained soil. Ease up on watering during winter and don't fertilize till spring and summer.
Easy on the nitrogen or all tree and no fruit! See tip below.
Grumichama Fruiting Tip

Make sure they have plenty of water when they are in bloom and throughout the fruiting phase. The trees drop the fruits and or the flowers at the slightest hint of soil dryness. The more water the better when flowering and fruiting.

Also apply a bit of organic fertilizer like the brand Age Old, 2-10-20 out under the trees drip line.
Also try Happy Frog Brand 4-9-3
1 ounce of vinegar mixed with 1 gal of water will help lower the soil pH?

Questions we will explore in the months ahead!

Is it better to grow Grumichama in full sun or will it grow well and fruit in part shade? Some growers have told me they produce two crops in part shade and they get burnt leaves and only 1 crop in full sun. We shall find out I suppose.
My tree produced for the first time at three years of age. It is growing in full sun.
