Bees play a critical role in pollination.

Important growing tips: https://www.pepesplants.com/macadamia-trees.html

Macadamia spp.

Proteaceae

IMPORTANT READ THIS: These young trees must be kept from frost and cold temperatures. Mature trees will survive temperatures as low as 30 degrees F. Colder temperatures will severely defoliate and kill the tree, unless protected by blankets. Grow the tree in a pot in cold climates and bring indoors. Keep near bright light or in a greenhouse during cold weather.

Origin: Macadamia integrifolia is native to southeastern Queensland where it grows in the rain forests and close to streams. M. tetraphylla is native to southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, also growing in rain forests, in moist places and along stream banks. There are types that appear to be natural hybrids. The macadamia was introduced into Hawaii about 1881 where it was used as an ornamental and for reforestation. The Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station named and introduced several promising selections in 1948, which led to the modern macadamia industry in Hawaii. In California two seedling macadamias were planted in the early 1880's and are still standing on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. The importation of improved and named varieties into California from Hawaii began about 1950. Macadamias are also commercially important in Australia, South Africa and Central America.

The Sweetsop aka Sugar Apple is related to the Cherimoya and the Soursop. Sweetsop will grow best in the subtropics and tropics. The tree is a fast-growing, but deciduous (looses it leaves) during cooler months. The trees can reach 15 feet on average, but is fairly easily restrained. Young trees can be trained against a surface, or pruned off to form a regular free-standing trunk. Growth is in one long flush, beginning in spring. Young plants need staking to protect from breakage. They are drought tolerant when established and do not withstand poor drainage. Fruit is delicious, sweet and tastes amazing when ripe and refrigerated overnight. Sugar apples taste like a sweet vanilla custard with a hint of pineapple. Its smooth and slightly grainy texture makes this fruit a delight to snack on.

Pitomba (Eugenia luschnathiana) is a delicious sweet apricot flavored fruit similar in size and growth habit as a grumichama.

Description TWO PLANTS PER ORDER

This little-known species is native to the State of Bahia, Brazil.

The pitomba is an attractive, small tree that produces and abundance of yellow, aromatic, cherrylike fruit. However, it is rarely seen outside of collections. While the pitomba is not likely to achieve commercial status in Florida, it makes an excellent dooryard crop and is worth planting on a broader scale. The tree is easy to care for and is relatively free of problems. native to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family, which includes other well-known plants such as guava and eucalyptus.

The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall, with a dense crown and a straight trunk. Its bark is smooth and reddish-brown in color, and its leaves are oval-shaped, glossy, and dark green. The tree produces small, white flowers with prominent yellow stamens that bloom in the spring and summer. These flowers are followed by round, red or dark purple fruits that are about 2-3 centimeters in diameter. The fruit is edible and has a sweet, juicy flavor, similar to that of a cherry.

Pitomba is often used in landscaping for its attractive foliage, flowers, and fruit, as well as for its tolerance to a variety of soils and environmental conditions. In addition, the fruit is widely consumed fresh, used in jams and jellies, and is also an ingredient in traditional medicines.

Flowers

Snowy white yellow flowers up to an inch and a half across are borne during the spring months and the fruit ripens about a month to six weeks later. Flower season is usually April through June.

Fruit

The fruit is broadly obovoid, about an inch long, with the apex crowned by 4 or 5 green sepals, about 1/2 inch long. The thin skin is a bright orange yellow. The soft, melting, juicy flesh is orange in color and aromatic, sweet to subacid in flavor. The fruit contains 1 to several seeds attached to one side of the seed cavity. The fruit matures from May to June and sometimes there is a light crop in the fall. The pitomba usually begins fruiting in about the third year after planting.

Planting

Trees grow over a wide variety of soils, but have less micronutrient problems under acidic conditions. If grown close to the coast usually they have excellent salt tolerance if in good condition nutritionally. Trees prefer sun for optimum fruiting, but will tolerate partial shade.

Irrigation

Your tree will require irrigation during establishment and during periods of drought.

More information

Rate of growth on most of these is about two feet or more a year, and they make excellent hedges where sufficient plants can be bought or accumulated. For people with limited growing space, pitombas make excellent container specimens and can grown and fruit quite well in seven-to-ten-gallon-sized containers.

Mature trees are quite cold hardy and survive to about 27°F without injury. Young plants will get injured at about 30°F.

Plinia cauliflora is a small bushy tree, native to Brazil. It’s known for its red, white-pulped fruits which grow directly on the trunk.

Jaboticaba trees typically reach a height of 10 - 15 feet in cultivation. They are profusely branched, beginning close to the ground and slanting upward and outward so that the dense rounded crown may attain an ultimate spread as wide as it is tall.

Jaboticaba trees will take full sun or some shade and are small enough to fit into many parts of the garden landscape. They are fairly wind tolerant but do not like salty sea air.

Jaboticabas grow and fruit best in rich, deep, acidic soil. Although not well adapted to alkaline soils, they may be grown successfully in containers. Mulching with pine bark and applying necessary nutrient sprays containing iron can clear up chlorotic leaves.

Jaboticabas can tolerate a few degrees of frost but do best under frost-free conditions. Red jaboticaba needs regular watering! Do not let them dry out and supplement twice a year with Sulphur to maintain low pH around 5.5

The fruit is grape-like in appearance, texture and taste. Blooms can be expected several times a year during warm months. Fresh fruit is delicious eaten out-of-hand and can be made into jellies, jams and wines. The skin is high in tannin.
