ITEM DESCRIPTION: One Neem Tree (Azadirachta indica) This is the true Neem Tree that is grown commercially in India. The oil from the neem seed is sold as a leaf polisher but it has a long history as an insecticide as well as an industrial lubricant. Medicinally, neem is used by Ayurvedic practitioners to treat a multitude of ailments. Neem trees flower once they reach 4-5’ tall. The fragrant, white flowers grow on long inflorescences. The fruits and seeds are the source of neem oil. In northern zones, Neem trees go dormant in the winter. The average planted height from soil level is 7-9 inches.
More about growing Neem: Neem is a hardy tree that can tolerate temperatures up to 120 F. (50 C.). However, extended cool weather with temperatures below 35 F. (5 C.) will cause the tree to drop its leaves. The tree won’t tolerate colder temperatures, poor soil drainage or prolonged drought.
USDA Hardiness Zones 9-10 Location: The tree should have a well-drained, frost-free location that is sunny and warm. Soil: Flourishes in rich, deep soil of medium or open texture. The tree needs the best drainage and cannot tolerate "wet feet". Irrigation: The trees benefit from regular moisture, but be careful not to overwater, as the tree won’t tolerate wet feet or poorly drained soil. Allow the soil to dry between every watering. Feed the tree about once a month in spring and summer, using a light application of any good organic quality, balanced fertilizer or a dilute solution of water-soluble fertilizer.
Fertilization: Feed the tree about once a month in spring and summer, using a light application of any good organic quality, balanced fertilizer or a dilute solution of water-soluble fertilizer. Start growing your seedling in part shade. Step your plant up to larger pots gradually as you acclimate it to the sun. Select a well drained spot preferably a place that has some protection from strong winds. It prefers a soil pH in the 6.2-7.0 range, but can grow within a range of 5.0-8.0 pH. Mature neem trees are light demanding, but seedlings tolerate moderate shade during their first growing season, especially on dry sites.
