The Legendary Dragon fruit aka: Pitaya

According to an ancient Chinese legend, the Dragon Fruit was created thousands of years ago by a fire breathing dragon. During a battle the dragon blew a final burst of fire containing the magnificent bright red fruit. The ancient Chinese believed that those who consumed the exotic pulp of dragon fruit are endowed with the strength, vitality and the immortality of the dragon. Well, immortality we won't vouch for but, the health benefits and delicious flavor of this exotic fruit is legendary.

Pre order your 1 gal or 3 gal Dragon Fruit Vine and start growing your very own. Before you know it, you will enjoy the exotic fruit with friends and family. The fruit is large with red, white or pink colored flesh inside. Dragon Fruit plants are easy to grow in containers as long as you provide a strong support structure!

Dragon Fruit offers excellent nutritional and health benefits. They are packed with high concentrations of antioxidants to boost the immune system.

Self Pollinating  Dragon Fruit Varieties

These Dragon Fruit plants will set fruit without cross pollination or hand pollination. Keep in mind the cross pollination by wind, insects or people will enhance fruit set and increase the yield.

Delight

This cultivar was developed in California by the Rare Fruit Council. The flesh is pink and the fruit has a pleasant sweet flavor. This Dragon is a cross between  red and white fleshed pitaya. Hylocereus polyrhizus X undatus. We think it's a real champion and rate it excellent for production, flavor etc!

Vietnamese White:

This impressive white fleshed Dragon is a leading export variety of Vietnam. This bright red fruit has a delicious white flesh that is sweet and tangy with a hint of lime. Grows well here in our humid and dry Florida climate.
Fruit can weigh up to 1.5 pounds each.

Makisupa:

Another excellent Dragon that will surely please the grower and best of all the lucky person who gets to eat it. The Sweet and slightly astringent flavor and  rich red colored flesh is sure to please. Fruits are usually about one pound!

American Beauty:

Dark Star:

Another very good Dragon to have in your grove. Fruit are usually over one pound each. Good mild grape flavor. More thorns means more ouches when handling the vines. That's why we give this Dragon four stars.

We also have Physical Graffiti, Purple Haze, Cosmic Charlie, Halleys Comet and Voodoo Child.

Picking, storing and eating Dragon Fruit

The best Dragon Fruit you will ever eat is the one you grow.

Pick your dragon fruit about 35 - 40 days after it has been on the vine. Look for a fruit that has a deep red/orange almost  even color. The fruit should be just a bit soft to the touch. If you know how to pick a ripe kiwi at the produce stand, then you will have no problem choosing a Dragon Fruit.

Fruit that is very firm is not ready to harvest. Don't be concerned that the spurs or wings are green, that's okay.

A fresh picked fruit can be eaten immediately and the flavor  is quite refreshing and tasty. We always get a boost of energy from eating the fruit.

After harvest you should refrigerate the fruit and enjoy within 3 days for best flavor. Fruit stored on a kitchen counter may spoil within a few days and loose all traces of sweetness. It may not taste very good at all. For longer storage you can  make a puree in a food processor and freeze the pulp for use in smoothies, desserts etc.
