DESCRIPTION: Two plants with minimum of 4 nodes each in an orchid basket.

Vanilla bean orchid (Vanilla tahitensis) this plant is the species that produces more aromatic and flavorful vanilla pods than its relative (Vanilla plantifolia)

The vanilla orchid plant is the source of natural vanilla flavoring used widely in desserts and beverages. This Tahitian species is in high demand and can produce vanilla pods in about three years time on average.

Light requirement: Light shade

Basic information on growth:

These orchids grow as vines that need shade and structure to grow on. Once the orchids mature they can grow up to 40 feet in length. Vanilla Orchids can be grown outside in USDA Zones 11 to 12, or in pots in Zones 4 to 11.

We will ship you two orchids. Each will be around 3-5 inches overall length. They produce pods in about 3 years on average with good care. Complete care and hand pollination instructions are provided with your order. You can also see more care and propagation videos here on our YouTube Channel.

Continue reading below for more tips on growing them.

More details on growing:

Light

Liking the light but never direct sun light. Keep in sunny area but in filtered light. Do not expose them to strong light. Again, these orchids need a bright filtered shade in order to bloom, cutting 50% of sunlight will see them thriving. Also require dark night. Best temperature is between 21'-32'.

Water

Only water when the top 2 inches of medium is drying out. They like to be evenly moist but not completely wet. They also thrive on humidity, bathroom is a great start. Foliar spray is good every 2-3 days.

Mix-Medium

Well-draining, orchid mix is good. It’s preferable to use sphagnum moss or coco-chip orchid mix in medium. You can also use potting clay pebbles. All of these mixes help aerate the roots and give proper drainage

Fertilizer

Give them small weak, weekly foliar fertilizer sprays when you first get the plant until they are about 18 inches tall. Then cut down to once a month. NPK 10-10-10 is ideal but anything close to that or for Orchid flowers is acceptable. Only use liquid fertilizer.

Wind

Keep away from strong wind. Provide them with trellis or post to climb.

Frost

No frost - best grown indoor

Fruiting

In approximately three years old, it will start to flower for one day. What initiates bloom is somewhat variable. It is thought that a dry period for a couple of months in the winter, as well as the vine reaching the top of the support and cascading off stimulates the flowering process. The blooms appear on flowering spikes that emerge at the leaf axis along the stems and many blooms will emerge from this spike over a period of weeks, usually one at a time and each flower lasts only one day. To produce vanilla beans, the flowers need to be hand pollinated, which is easily done with a toothpick. 6-8 months later a vanilla pod is expected to be ready for harvesting!

WE GUARANTEE LIVE DELIVERY Message us along with a photo of the plant immediately upon arrival if the plants are in poor condition. We cannot guarantee plants that are no longer in our care. Many of our plants require warm temperatures. Shipping to areas that are cold will be at buyer's risk. We offer quality plants that are inspected and approved for shipment. Pepe's Plants will not be responsible for plants that die as a result of improper care and handling once it is in the buyers hands.

On arrival of your orchid place them in an area with temperatures about (70-80 F) in shade but NOT direct sun. NO direct sunlight at all! NO partial shade - FULL SHADE ONLY! Once again: Sun will burn the orchids! Allow the plants a week or two to adjust before transplanting or fertilizing.
