Alma is a variety developed by the Agricultural Experiment Service of Texas A&M University. This variety was introduced in 1975. It is a medium-small fig that has golden-brown skin with a pear shape and amber pulp. The pulp is very rich and sweet. Alma is also a great drying variety with a good sugar content and excellent flavor. Continuous cropper through the summer. Small eye, moderately closed with a drop of resin to block the eye from spoiling rain and insects.
A very productive tree that grows very well both in the Northern and Southern States. Delicious figs are produced Twice per year! Self pollinates and begins to produce fast. Zones 7a- 10b.
NOTE: Figs will from time to time develop rust on leaves. This is very common due to humidity. It will not kill your tree. Avoid watering the leaves only the soil. You can control rust with cooper or Bordeaux mix. Figs in sandy soil could be attacked by nematodes. You can grow in containers and if you have nematodes in the soil elevate the containers at least 6-8 inches off the ground. Be sure to pot them up only with fresh, clean potting soil.
