Highway 290 Pink Buttons is considered a found heirloom rose discovered growing along Highway 290 in South Texas. Although its complete history remains unknown, heirloom rose enthusiasts believe it may be related to Rosa chinensis minima, one of the earliest miniature China roses.

Unlike many modern roses that are propagated commercially by budding or grafting, this antique miniature has survived because gardeners have rooted cuttings and shared it from one generation to the next. That tradition continues today.

Growing Highway 290 Pink Buttons

This heirloom miniature rose performs exceptionally well in Florida and throughout the southern United States. It prefers six or more hours of sunlight each day, regular watering during dry weather and a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

Its naturally compact habit makes it ideal for decorative containers, landscape borders, cottage gardens and walkways. Because it grows on its own roots, the plant remains vigorous year after year without concerns about graft failure.

Propagating Highway 290 Pink Buttons

One of my goals is to help preserve this wonderful heirloom by encouraging every gardener to learn how easy it is to propagate.

In my experience, the best time to root cuttings is during the fall, when temperatures become more moderate and the plants are still actively growing.

  • Select healthy semi-hardwood stems about 4 to 6 inches long.
  • Remove flowers and lower leaves.
  • Lightly wound the bottom of the stem.
  • Dip the cutting into a quality rooting hormone.
  • Plant into a sterile, well-drained rooting medium that stays evenly moist.
  • Place the cuttings inside a clear plastic propagation dome with adjustable air vents.
  • Keep the cuttings in bright shade or filtered sunlight.
  • Lightly mist as needed to maintain humidity while avoiding constantly wet foliage.
  • After roots develop, gradually open the vents over several days before transplanting.
