Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
Pepe's Plants and Fruit Trees has provided home gardeners with the top quality plants for over 10 years. We do not believe in the need for selling either GMOs seed or plants. We have many customers that agree with us and some who disagree. We have been accused of being anti technology. We have even been accused of being ignorant and even foolish for not endorsing or trusting the science of genetic engineering.
Today the public is confused and often misled about GMOS. Here are some details regarding the difference between GMOs and conventional seeds, plants etc.
Hybrid seeds and the plants developed from the seed are very different from those that are genetically modified. Hybrid seeds are intentionally bred out in the field to develop offspring that have specific traits. The best traits of the parent plants. After much trial and error and multiple generations of new seeds the breeder selects the new offspring with the most desirable characteristics. The process continues by crossing pollen from plant to plant. These expert breeders identify the varietal traits from within the same species, over a period of years to finally develop new varieties. These new varieties are grown in test plots to finally select the best plants.
GMO seeds are not the same at all! They are very, very different. GMO varieties are developed in a laboratory using biotechnology. Gene splicing is used to extract traits from different species. These traits (genes, proteins, enzymes etc) get inserting with the DNA of the plant. This combination would never happen in the natural world. It would not happen in the field or in the jungle, forests, deserts, oceans etc. This experimental technology could very possibly lead to unstable combinations of genes in the plant. The genes spliced could be anything the GMO engineer wishes to use. Theses genes can come from plants or animals, from bacteria to pesticides. Again, this could not happen in the natural world!
The public is afraid of GMOs and so am I. Monsanto and others in the GMO game will tell you otherwise. They have scientists and the FDA cheerleading for the GMO team. The public also is hearing from other scientists opposed to Monsanto and others.
"Seventy-five percent of processed foods on supermarket shelves—from soda to soup, crackers to condiments—contain genetically engineered ingredients. The long-term effects of these foods on human health and ecology are still unknown, and public concern has been steadily intensifying."
Jeremy Gruber, JD, is the president and executive director of the Council for Responsible Genetics
Today's world is becoming full of cancer, older folks getting alzheimer's and obesity is at epidemic proportions. You and your loved ones are under more and more stress than ever. Sometimes the overwhelming rushed crazy lives we lead forces us to be like sheep and just follow along to get along.
Stop, breathe think and get involved. Do something and get busy taking some action to improve the situation.
As consumers you and I can affect change with our wallets.
People want to return to nature and to the benefits of pure clean food, air and water. The facts indicate that the organic food industry is growing tremendously year after year. People are making healthier choices and that brings about change.
You and I have the rights we fight for and nothing more. Fight for the right to at least know what they are putting in our food and how it was grown and produced.
Demand more independent research on the effects GMO's could have on all of us.
We the people have that right don't we?
